Treasure hunt 2.0: still the best team building activity around

Where you ever told that paper books, vinyl records, and denim jackets were going to become obsolete? Did you believe that? Neither did we. A classic stays a classic, no matter how many fancy options and temporary fads engage the public's attention for a while. Treasure hunts are the denim jackets of the team building industry: they will always charm, entice, engage. They will always work.

Feel free to browse through our portfolio: this is one of the activities our clients never tire of booking, because it genuinely has everything: it's fun, thrill, physically challenging without being exhausting, it is rewarding and it allows human dynamics within the group to emerge and be resolved naturally. And yes, we might be luckier than most agencies, because we get to organise treasure hunts in one of the most beautiful cities on the planet, but that's not all there is to it.

Treasure hunts: a childhood classic turned team building staple

Trying to reinvent the wheel is a corporate pitfall from which we are not exempt. And yet, as the more experienced event planners will tell you, sometimes the simplest, most obvious solution really is the answer. Escape rooms have gone in and out of fashion for a few years (we do like them though), cooking classes have their moment, but a treasure hunt will always deliver. Clues, challenges, puzzles, an amazing outdoor setting and properly constructed teams are a recipe for success.

The reason is fairly simple: once you strip away the marketing gloss: people love a fun challenge and a well-planned scavenger hunt will provide exactly that. Research backs this up too: studies on workplace engagement suggest team building activities can lift engagement scores by roughly 30%, with organisations that invest in this kind of initiative reporting up to a 25% jump in team performance.

The anatomy of a treasure hunt 2.0

Naturally, we have our own recipe for treasure hunts. Hiding a few notes around a car park and shouting "go" is not what a treasure hunt 2.0 is about, that's a scavenger hunt from someone's tenth birthday party. The version we're talking about involves iPads, interactive maps and challenges built to be experienced and captured on camera as teams explore genuinely wonderful locations. Every route gets planned with real care, the pace calibrated so nobody's bored and nobody's exhausted, with a touch of unpredictability thrown in deliberately, because predictable is boring and boring doesn't build teams.

The whole experience is customisable too, which matters more than people expect. Draw inspiration from a film, a book, your company's own origin story, whatever gives colleagues the sense they're the actual protagonists rather than extras in someone else's corporate video. The iPad handles navigation, dishes out clues and keeps everyone connected, whilst the camera captures the moments that later get stitched into a commemorative video worth sharing across the whole company. It's proof, essentially, that the day happened and that people had an absolute blast doing it.

A treasure hunt looks like pure entertainment from the outside, and it is, but underneath the fun there's genuine problem solving going on. Teams have to divide tasks, trust each other's judgement under pressure and communicate quickly when the clock's ticking, skills that translate directly back to the office on Monday morning. According to research from the Kenexa Institute, roughly half of the positive shifts in workplace communication trace back to social interactions outside strict work matters, team building included. A treasure hunt 2.0 hands you exactly that kind of interaction, wrapped in a genuinely thrilling package rather than a forced icebreaker circle.

Competition, handled well, sharpens the whole thing further. It pushes people to commit, spices up decision making and gets even the quietest colleague shouting directions across a courtyard. Combine that with structured challenges and the fun does the rest, no forced enthusiasm required, no cringeworthy trust falls in sight.

We tried it first

Treasure hunts have sat in our repertoire since day one of this business, and over the years we've fine-tuned them into precisely what clients tell us they appreciate most: an activity that's genuinely useful for the office whilst also delivering a proper day out. So much so that the outcome barely changes from booking to booking, fierce teams, wonderfully unlikely strategies and people who are, without exaggeration, having the time of their lives.

We decided, at one point, to test our own medicine. In July our own team headed to Como for a day that started with a fairly steep trek up towards a view worth every uphill step, followed by lunch, a spot of celebration for our colleagues' hard-earned wins, and then the main event: a treasure hunt with iPads, three teams, an interactive map and photo and video challenges tied to our own company values. It ran through hillside paths before landing us right in Como's historic centre, turning the town itself into our playing field. We wrote the full story on our blog if you fancy the details, complete with the yoga session and pool time that followed once the competitive dust had settled.

Is this your next adventure?

Booking a treasure hunt 2.0 isn't about ticking an HR box, it's about watching colleagues discover each other properly, argue cheerfully over a clue, and walk away with a shared story that outlasts the day itself. Rome, with its layers of history and hidden corners, makes an extraordinary backdrop for exactly this kind of adventure. If exploring the Eternal City through technology and teamwork sounds like your company's next great outing, get in touch with Team Building Roma and let's plan something your colleagues will still be talking about at Christmas drinks.
